On Monday, Peruvian Deputy Defense Minister Ivan Vega announced
that the Peruvian military had captured the two leaders of the southern column
of the Shining Path. Dionisio Ramos and Alexander Alarcon Soto, the captured
Shining Path members, are believed responsible for an attack on Peruvian
security forces in Cusco.
The report noted
that soldiers found explosives and guns near the gas pipeline connected Peru’s
Camisea gas field to Lima, the capital city. Deputy Minister Vega told the
press, “With this operation, the southern wing of Shining Path is dismantled.
An energy and tourism hub is secured. It is possible they will send another
column to take over the zone, but we will be watching.”
In mining related news, the formalization of Peru’s large
number of illegal miners continues to be debated. Andina
reported that Roque Benavides indicated that one of the main topics of
discussion for Perumin, the country’s 32nd mining convention, will
be the formalization of the country’s artisanal miners.
He explained, “The care of the environment is crucial, and
as such formal and responsible businesses in this country, we need to project
this image. We cannot speak for the informal mining industry, but we are ready
to collaborate so that the environment will be cared for the way we have
already been doing.”
