On Friday, the Peruvian Central Bank (BCR) announced
that the country’s copper production grew 34.8% in October year-over-year, the
eighth straight month of growth in copper production. The declared that copper
has established itself as the key driver of growth in the Peruvian mining
sector, one of the most important sectors of the country’s economy.
In other mining-related news, Southern Peru Copper, owners
of the embattled Tía María mining project, announced
in a press release that it intends to continue with the Tía María project
despite the violent protests that halted the project earlier this year. Since
then, the mining company has focused on carrying out various development
projects in the area to win over the local community. However, Juan Benites,
the Peruvian Minister of Agriculture, said that Southern’s project is no longer
in the Peruvian government’s plans, and will have to wait until after the
country’s presidential election.
Lastly, the Peruvian government announced
on Thursday that it had acquired a powerful satellite from France. French Ambassador
to Peru Fabrice Mauries claimed that the satellite is the most powerful in
Latin America, and will be used in Peru to fight drug trafficking and illegal
mining, and to prevent natural disasters.
